Sunken treasure!

From the Canadian press April 9th 2019
Halifax:
Beneath the choppy waves off Nova Scotia's rugged coast are thousands of shipwreck sites sprinkled with lost treasure century old coins cannons and perhaps stolen historic booty from the White House.
Its a treasure seekers dream to dive the wrecks and search for the elusive one thing that will capture the images of Pirate treasure ..Ships , Spanish Galleons, Schooners and hugh Colonial three masters ..struggling to stay afloat during a Sou'wester , and finally breaking up on a shoal and torn apart as Pirates and fishermen alike get swept out to sea forever..Picture a Pirate ship flying the jolly Roger sifting through the morning fog laying offshore waiting for a safe time to offload their treasures from their ship in order to bury it...
Treasure salvagers who once spent millions of dollars exploring such wreck sites are preventing any shipwrecks from being scoured in any meaningful way , and the region has become somewhat of a wild west for so called pirate divers.Nothing would make any person believe that any wreck was safe from looters..To date ,000 ships have met their fate and went down to their final resting place off the Coast of Nova Scotia. The area was often visited by early European Explorers in the th and th centuries and has been a major shipping destination.
Over the decades treasure hunters and wreck divers have come from all over the globe to try their luck seeking treasure from the wrecks , they had to apply to the Government who had to issue Treasure Trove licences in order for them to dive and hunt for treasure.Under the Treasure Trove Act which is the only one in north America at that time allowed seekers to dive and explore the wrecks..
A key find came in the year 1965 when divers recovered 500,000 dollars in gold coin from a wreck Le Chameau , a French ship that sank near Louisbourg NS in 25. The Treasure Trove Act stated that licence holders had to report any finds and the Minister reserved the right to to retain the treasure upon payment of a royalty ..But in 20 the Act was repealed by the then NDP Government .The province was looking for a way to preserve and protect Nova Scotua's underwater cultural and heritage resources..When the task force asked the question as to whether the private firms should be allowed to conduct salvage operations and disturb the sea floor just to recover artifacts..
Shipwrecks now are protected under the Province's Special Protection Act and the Province said underwater artifacts should be left in situ and archaeology at these sites only is permitted with a Heritage Research Permit .Since 20 31 heritage Permits have been issued ...every artifact has to be identified and cataloged with written documentation of site location and wreck being investigated..The Province of Nova Scotia should appoint a trained Archeologist to oversee management of the sites...Jeff MacKinnon says its unfair that the hunt for treasure on Oak Island is allowed to go ahead when him an his colleagues hands are tied as to hunting treasure treasure on shipwrecked site and the bounty sits unclaimed on the ocean floor.
Why not work with the Government to allow the private sector to collect treasure that is unclaimed from the seafloor and wrecks then allow the treasure to go to museums for the public to enjoy?

yeah I hear that all the time around here and if I were to scavenge areas for treasure I would try to find any area that could not be reached by anyone who could hinder me..beaches are ideal because unless there is a monitor to answer to they cannot bother you ..thats how is is here people scour the beaches in order not to be bothered..Now if its a State Park or gov owned Park with beach then its different..sorry you prob enjoyed what you did so don't give up...There still is a lot of areas that has much to be discovered..

Interesting post in that I am currently reading a book by Clive Cussler, who recovered the HUNLEY, the submarine that sank the Housatomic during the American Civil War. In this current book they are hunting for and have located the freighter carrying the gold that Nikolai II, Tsar of Russia was sneaking out of Russia to Great Britain.
If there are that ,many sunken ships that no longer belong to anyone, I think divers should be able to pay for a license to dive and keep what they find. The government was to lazy to mount a dive teams of their own and now they want to get money not only with a license fee but also the riches after someone else took the risk

Exactly and I love Clive Cussler's books I used to read a lot once but got so busy with things around here ,,and I am agreed on that I think that if the divers had licences to dive and take their own lives into their hands they should be able to reap the benefits of finders keepers..Governments are so freaking greedy and its very unfair and if divers are diving illegally I hope they don't get caught ..they deserve something for thei time expense and effort...
